CU Stroke Angels

The CU Stroke Angels is an initiative by a group of stroke neurologists and researchers at CUHK with the mission to improve outcome of stroke patients and enhance stroke service development in Hong Kong.

CUStrokeTeam

Through translational research and education provided to healthcare professionals as well as general public, we aim to develop advanced therapies to reduce the disabilities from stroke, prevent the occurrence of this devastating disease and raise the public awareness in the community. Collaborating with Hospital Authority, Fire Service Department and various local and international academic institutes, we strive to improve care for stroke patients throughout the patient journey.

Research Highlights

Stroke incidence and recurrence trends in Hong Kong

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in Hong Kong. While stroke was thought to be a disease of the elderly, alarming trends of young stroke had been reported. Evaluating the age-specific trends of stroke may inform healthcare resource allocation on stroke prevention and treatment.

Predicting risks of stroke using advanced imaging techniques

Stroke is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD) is an important cause of stroke, which is more common in Asian, Hispanic and African populations. There is a high risk of stroke relapse or death in ICAD patients, despite adequate medical treatment. Therefore, it is imperative to study the mechanisms and risks of stroke, as well as the associated risk factors, in ICAD patients.

Chinese have a higher prevalence rate of Intracranial arterial stenosis (ICAS) than Caucasians

In collaboration with Centre for the Prevention of Stroke and Dementia, University of Oxford and CUHK Neurology, the research team compared the prevalence and risk factors of ICAS, in 1,300 Caucasian (in Oxford) versus 700 Chinese (in Hong Kong) patients with transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and minor stroke, and systematically reviewed literature on ICAS prevalence in stroke/TIA patients in different populations.
