Biography

Professor Dr Thomas Leung is the first certified neuro-sonologist (transcranial Doppler ultrasound and Carotid duplex) by the American Society of Neuroimaging in Hong Kong and he performed the first intracranial self-expandable stenting in Asia for patients with refractory strokes attributed to high-grade intracranial atherosclerotic disease. He pioneered drug-eluting stent in angioplasty of vertebral artery ostium to reduce in-stent restenosis, as well as emergency endovascular stroke therapies, including Penumbra suction device and retrievable stents, rendering the Prince of Wales Hospital a tertiary endovascular referral center in Hong Kong. Countrywide, as a council member for National Endovascular Treatment for Stroke Committee, and Stroke Prevention and Risk Factor Control Committee, China, Dr. Leung provided suggestions and plans for national stroke guidelines and policy. He is currently the national coordinator for Safe Implementation of Treatment in Stroke (SITS). In 2011, Dr. Leung set up the first 'Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) Clinic' in Hong Kong; and thereafter, the government funded another 3 district TIA clinics under the same model. In collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he implemented telemedicine for off-site thrombolysis triage for underserved regions meeting a corporate standard; and for which, he was the recipient of the HIMSS-Elsevier Digital Health Award (Asia-Pacific Region) in 2013.

In research, Dr. Leung focused on the stroke mechanism, outcome, and cerebral revascularization as treatment for intracranial atherosclerotic disease. Dr. Leung has been the principal investigator or co-investigator for over 50 international studies in stroke. As a principal investigator, Dr. Leung has received 5 earmarked competitive grants (2 GRF 1 HMRF 1 PSDAS, 1 NSCF/GRF).

Dr. Leung has published more than 150 full papers in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters since joining CUHK. Dr. Leung serves as a regular reviewer for The Lancet, Stroke, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry (JNNP), American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR), Cerebrovascular Diseases, International Journal of Stroke, and International Journal of Cardiology. He also serves as an Editor/Editorial Board member of Stroke, Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Interventional Neurology, and International Scholarly Research Network (ISRN) Radiology, and Hong Kong Medical Journal. Over the years, he has delivered more than 100 lectures worldwide for The World Federation of Neurology, Food and Drug Administration (the United States), World Stroke Organization, European Stroke Organization, American Stroke Association, International Stroke Genetics Consortium, Society of Vascular Interventional Neurology, Asia Pacific Stroke Organization, and the Ministry of Health, China.

He was awarded the Distinguished Research Paper Award for Young Investigators 2011 by the Hong Kong College of Physicians; Young Investigator Award 2011 by the SH Ho Cardiovascular and Stroke Centre. In April 2011, Dr. Leung received the prestigious First Class Award of the 2011 Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award (Science and Technology) in the category of Natural Sciences by the Ministry of Health, China, for the studies in 'Intracranial Large Artery Atherosclerotic Stroke: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Pathogenesis, Imaging and Treatment'. For his research in endovascular neuro-intervention, Dr. Leung received the Second Prize in Medical Technology by the Chinese Medical Association in 2011 for 'Angioplasty and stenting for intracranial stenosis in Chinese'; and second prize in the State of Scientific and Technological Progress Award, China in 2014 for 'Strategies in cerebral revascularization'. He was the recipient of HIMSS-Elsevier Digital Health Award (Asia-Pacific Region) 2013 for his contribution in developing telemedicine to enhance stroke care of the underserved regions. He was elected as an International Fellow of the American Heart association (FAHA) in 2015.
